Interiors, furniture & objects in a craft based sensibility

Founded in 1993 by Thomas Wright and Joseph Fratesi, Atlas Industries is a multi-disciplinary design and manufacturing firm integrating interiors, furniture and objects in a craft-based sensibility.

Our work is informed by the conviction that designing and building are mutually implied processes, always in dialogue. As the abstraction of design finds material expression in an object or space, the success of that expression must be sought in one’s experience of it.

This approach is evident across the spectrum of our work, but nowhere more so than in our signature as4 modular furniture system™, whose versatility and understated beauty have made it a favorite of designers and architects across the globe.

Thomas Wright grew up on a farm in California’s Central Valley. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in architecture, he worked in architecture and engineering firms in New York and San Francisco, before settling in New York.

Joseph Fratesi was raised in northern Illinois. After studying economics and history at the University of Illinois, he moved to New York where he and Wright met, and began to explore the ideas and create the body of work that evolved into Atlas Industries.

In 2013, after being based in Brooklyn for twenty-two years, we moved to Newburgh, in New York’s Hudson Valley. Here, in our studio and shop, we design, prototype, invent, build, and produce our work.
