The Silo Hotel

Cape Town, South Africa

Hotels
The Silo Hotel is a celebration of art, style, architecture and design. A tribute to timeless glamour and contemporary luxury. This exclusive five-star premium hotel towers above the V&A Waterfront and is surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City. Each of the 28 rooms has been individually decorated by owner Liz Biden using colourful and eclectic pieces which juxtapose its modern, industrial architecture. The Silo Hotel has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) which houses Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art. The exterior of the building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio.

Q&A

How does the design of your space (or an element of the design) impact the experiences people have there?

"The idea was to create a lively, welcoming, and contemporary space that offered only the most accommodating, interesting and personalised experiences for our guests. It has been so rewarding seeing locals and international visitors enjoying this amazing space. The experience at The Silo Hotel is focused on the art and culture of Cape Town while celebrating the exquisite natural beauty of South Africa’s Mother City."
Q&A

What is the interior design style of your space?

"The Silo Hotel is a contemporary space where art, history, architecture and luxury travel collide. Liz Biden, owner of The Royal Portfolio, has been the impetus behind all interior design and is a pioneer in destination-specific design. Liz has tried to contrast the stark industrial exterior of the building with warm colours, vibrant fabrics, exciting ornaments and contemporary African art. Each room at The Silo is unique and adopts its’ own vibrant colour and maximalist style implemented through Liz’s eye for the exquisite. Each bed has its own unique and beautiful headboard made by Moorgas & Sons and there are 80 crystal chandeliers throughout the hotel which were handmade in Egypt. Ardmore fabrics are used in the guest library and Room 603. The Royal Portfolio's newly released coffee table book, A Perfect Stay, tells a visual story of the Biden family and of The Royal Portfolio. It showcases the extraordinary style of Liz Biden at each of the four properties where minimalism is in short supply."
Q&A

What Custom/Original Element do your guests notice most often? What do they say about it?

"The views offered by the glittering pillowed-glass windows designed by Heatherwick are certainly a standout feature for those visiting The Silo Hotel. The grain silo building was once the tallest building in Sub-Saharan African when it was completed in 1924 and remains the tallest in the V&A Waterfront, offering unique panoramic perspectives of Table Mountain, the waterfront precinct and city centre. Liz Biden’s interior designs are undoubtedly another major highlight. She has created a lively, eclectic, and luxurious space, a quirky distinction from the cold, raw feel of the building’s exterior. Guests love how the heritage of the building has been silently incorporated into its interior design. The concentric circle chandeliers on the sixth level represent the original steel rings used in the original grain elevator. Many of the original industrial features are incorporated into the industrial design of the hotel such as the grain hopper heads in the entrance lobby and the machine head on the sixth floor."
