Fable was created to be a fun and casual neighborhood restaurant that celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients in fantastical ways.
Owner and chef Jon Hearnsberger took over the old space occupied by Luna Cafe on Castro Street in 2013, turning it into a whimsical space serving California Americana cuisine.
The restaurant features a "storybook modern" interior, designed by Craige Walters, with portraits of animals in Edwardian clothing lining the clean, simple walls. Stories from Aesop's Fables are found etched in glass and chandeliers that look like deer antlers. A cabin-style dining room with wallpaper that resembles reclaimed wood, looks onto an open kitchen. Guests can opt to dine out back in the open patio area.
Comfort dishes, like All American Pot Roast, come with unexpected twists from chef Hearnsberger, such as hints of kumquat, a touch of coriander with green tea or a blood orange aioli.
