The latest offering from chef Gabriela Cámara, whose stylish eatery Contramar is one of the most sought-after reservations in Mexico City. Like Contramar, Cala—located in San Francisco's Hayes Valley—takes seafood to its highest level.
Cámara worked with local firm Charles Hemminger Architects on the design of the 3,000-square-foot, light-filled space. The former garage, built in 1919, enjoys vaulted ceilings, skylights and clerestory windows. Simple furnishings, cement walls, and custom-made Oaxacan barro negro clay pendant lights by Colectivo 1050˚, a Mexican pottery collective, create a cool, laid-back vibe. Trellised kangaroo vines and a fiddle-leaf fig tree add life to the dining room.
Technology is also an important component of the design. Cala is the first restaurant in the city to use Meyer Sound Laboratories’ Constellation Acoustic System, which allows the staff to easily adjust the room’s acoustics, making the guest experience that much more optimal.
