Calavera

Calavera

Oakland, CA

Restaurants
2337 Broadway, Oakland 94612, CA
Calavera is an ultra-modern Mexican restaurant, highlighting traditional regional ingredients and techniques, reimagined in a new context that combines with the rebel spirit of Oakland to create a truly eclectic experience at The Hive, the city's uptown, mixed-use development.

Oakland-based design firm Arcsine used regional materials from Oaxaca to build out an interior of unexpected geometric forms taking a contemporary stance on old-world style. The material palette extends to the bar with a series of custom geometric boxes as shelving, placed in a motif from the Labna Mayan ruins, creating artistic niches to display bottles.

To complement the strength of the weathered wood bar, they commissioned Oaxacan ceramicist Omar Hernandez to do the vibrantly colored tiles and make specialized copitas for mezcal. It's a comfortable setting for sampling one of the best mezcal selections in the Bay Area, unknowingly captivated by the delicate pattern of the leather bar surface.

Calavera features an extensive cocktail program, a full wine list that will challenge everything you thought you knew about pairing Mexican food with wines, and an extensive collection of agave spirits.
