Founded in 1863, Hospital for Special Surgery is the nation’s oldest orthopedic hospital. More than 29,000 surgical procedures are performed annually. HSS performs more hip surgeries and more knee replacements than any other hospital in the nation. HSS surgeons who specialize in joint replacement perform, on average, 365 of these operations every year. The hospital's research division is internationally recognized as a leader in the investigation of musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases. HSS was the only hospital in the Northeast to receive the 2012 Gallup Great Workplace Award, which recognizes the most engaged workplaces in the world.
