Stephanie Strange

Corsicana, TX

"Stephanie Strange is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice engages drawings on paper, kinetic hanging art, concrete installations; and an extensive venue of typewriter inspired art including a body of artwork typed on typewriters, sculptures created with their parts, a collection of published poetry, and interactive presentations. Her work is found in permanent public collections including Twin Oaks Library, Austin, University of Texas, Department of Human Ecology, Austin, and Texas State University, San Marcos. Strange has been featured in exhibitions and festivals in the United States and is collected internationally.

Stephanie finds inspiration in the energy created by communication. She observes communication as a growing life form and investigates the myriad effect of its existence through the application of subject, medium and method in which she combines. Her work tells visual stories of the juxtaposition of amorphous organic ideas processed through medium and allegorized in simple elements such as lines and shapes.

Strange was born in Dallas, Texas and lived her early years throughout the Metroplex. She has a BFA in Graphic Art from Sam Houston State University. Prior to her studies at SHSU, she completed a BA in Studio Art at Hill Junior College on full art scholarships. She has professional experience in sales, management, marketing, event planning and her last corporate job included graphic design in publishing for four years in San Antonio, Texas.

Strange relocated to Chicago, Illinois where she launched her art career in 2003 exhibiting her work in creative venues and promoting the development of art in her community by organizing art walks and open studio tours. Four years later, she returned to Texas settling in the Austin area where she contributed a profound influence on her Bastrop art community. For the next five years, she was a member of the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild and served on their board. She chaired the Featured Artist Venue, which she transformed by establishing a First Friday Reception Program in the downtown area. Strange was also a founding member of a downtown gallery that inspired a concentrated area of galleries and studios. By invitation, Strange served on the Bastrop Art in Public Places Task Force exhibiting her passion for public art. Stephanie Strange’s attention to bringing art to the public was evident in the energy and ideas she contributed.

Stephanie took a new direction in 2012 when she moved to The Netherlands. For the next two years, she took the opportunity of being submerged in an environment of a complete restart to reflect on her past ten years of professional art and the future direction of her career. In 2014, Strange returned to Texas where her studio houses her favorite typewriters, drawing materials and tools, renewed in her art direction. Strange is moving forward with a refocus on expanding her approach from a community base to an international exploration.

Collected internationally, artist Stephanie Strange has work in private and public collections. She lives and works in rural Corsicana, Texas where she continues to study communication and energy."
