Seoul Sister Studio

San Francisco, CA

"Hand crafted carved ceramics that are meant to be held."
Jee Wipperfurth is the Bay Area ceramicist behind Seoul Sister Studio, a producer of small batch, handmade items. Her love of ceramics began over 18 years ago. Jee is an engineer by education, a teacher and a designer by profession, a lover of architecture (what she considers the ultimate marriage of art and function), and an appreciator of the various natural landscapes that are the Bay Area. Her kaleidoscopic background and interests influence her work, which she considers a balance between the orderly and the organic.

Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"I start with a form, usually a functional vessel, examine the salient characteristics, and then carve away and texturize the surface to reveal a revised object that feels true to its essence."

Q&A

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?

"Unlike some sculpture my pieces are meant to be touched and held, since utility is a core characteristic. I want people to be drawn to a piece, want to pick it up to feel the texture of the carved areas against the contrast of the smooth ones, and to really look at it, to see the detail and find the surprise elements."

Q&A

What is your favorite material to work with?

"Until recently, I worked exclusively with porcelain, my favorite medium. Although it is difficult to use due to its plasticity and requires lots of patience, especially during the inactive stages of my process, the clean and modern aesthetic it can produces, as well as its translucence are worth the time and effort."
