“Sam Messer is a painter, printmaker, and sculptor who has a history of working collaboratively with writers. Known for his work with Paul Auster on The Story of My Typewriter, an illustrated book about their friendship and Auster’s relationship to the typewriter, and Denis Johnson on Cloud of Chalk, Messer creates intriguing portraits of the authors as well as portrayals of their respective stories. Messer received a BFA degree from Cooper Union and an MFA degree from Yale University. He is represented by Nielsen Gallery in Boston and Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles. His work is in public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Art Institute of Chicago, and Yale University Art Gallery.”
