Sam Gray

Charlottesville, VA

Sam Gray is an emerging artist, illustrator, and graphic designer working out of her studio at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. Gray's work examines themes of feminism, human relationship with nature, and the psyche through a style she's dubbed anthro-botanical surrealism. Gray graduated summa cum laude with a BFA in graphic design from the University of Georgia in 2012.

In 2016 Gray was accepted into McGuffey's Incubator Studio program, which was an invaluable foundation for her career as an artist. Since then she juried into McGuffey's Art Association, participated in numerous group shows (in Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and even Munich, Germany), won the 2018 Tom Tom City Art Bus competition, and exhibited two solo shows (Gaean Reveries at McGuffey Art Center and Dear Lilith at Studio IX Gallery, both in Charlottesville in 2018). Most recently, Gray's work was included in an exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art entitled New Waves, an exhibition curated by Carmen Hermo of the Brooklyn Museum's Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
