Rupert Garcia

San Francisco, CA

“Rupert Garcia, born in California was reared in the northern part of the state, is one of San Francisco's most important Bay Area artists. Garcia was initially recognized for the politically oriented posters he made as part of the Chicano art movement between 1967 and 1975, which addressed issues of politics, race, and the Vietnam War. Since then, his imagery and symbolism have become less issue-specific, reflecting a more universal and humanistic approach to art and politics. As an international artist Rupert Garcia was influenced by Cuban silkscreen posters presented during the 1970’s by Rene Mederos. The influenced was taken from the interest in the theme of the revolutionary experience. The poster was used as a mean of communication internationally. Rupert Garcia combined short messages in English and Spanish with forms, colors and lettering in a minimal style. He uses the silkscreen process as his favorite media to obtain bright.”
