"We make eco-friendly custom wallpaper that is hand block printed and hand painted."
Amy studied printmaking and drawing at the State University of NY at Purchase and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts. Graduating with a BFA in ‘92 Amy went to work in NYC and learned the trade in the flower district where she honed her custom wallpaper making skills doing custom hand painted wallpapers for high-end commercial clients. In 2005 she branched out and started PAPER MILLS, inc to focus on block printing, her first passion and has most recently introduced a line of block printed and embroidered fabrics to coordinate with her extensive wallpaper line.

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"I usually have pretty clear ideas about new collections or techniques I want to try out.. When the patterns are developed it comes naturally what the coloration should be. I do draw a lot in nature of nature.. primarily using brush and ink and many of my patterns come from that exercise. Also I'm constantly looking at the world in detail through the drawing exercise.. so I know what I like to see... and I try to make things that I like to be around with best wishes that the end user likes it too."

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"This whole thing is rather hilarious. I suppose the biggest unexpected surprise is that there are clients all over the world who understand and appreciate my work. The obstacles are the influx of digital "easy" patterns everyone makes on their computers. Quick design is what I call it. What i do is SLOW design and I'm sticking with that because I can make things that aren't so easy to knock off. I want to continue to bring unique materials to market. So I keep working on whats next. My eye has been honed over the last decade. I try to keep a good handle on what my contemporaries are doing so that I can fill the void."
