Tanner Jackson Rhines (born 1995) is a visual artist and entrepreneur from Fairbanks, Alaska, who specializes in black and white free-style cartoon works, a style he refers to as Condention. Defined by the artist as a psychological labyrinth of characters and life energies, the Condentions are meant to celebrate the viewer’s individual character and the spaces they occupy in reality. The son of a construction superintendent and a high school teacher, Tanner began drawing at the age of 3. He is heavily influenced by science fiction, American pop-culture, technologies of the future, the complexities of spirituality, and the polarities of the human experience.
In 2015, Tanner was chosen from 350,000 entries to received Scholastic Art and Writing's prestigious Gold Medal Portfolio. This award placed him in the company of previous recipients, including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Cy Twombly, Steven King, and Robert Redford among others. Tanner has had work included for two consecutive years in the Art.Write.Now. tour across the United States, in addition to having pieces displayed in the Washington DC, at the Department of Education, as well as in the President's Office for the Committee on Arts and Humanities. Although Tanner, a self-taught artist, received the Chairman's Scholarship Award from the School of Visual Arts, a prominent art institution in New York, he did not attend an art school or university.
After Scholastics, in 2016, Tanner was shortlisted in the International Emerging Artist Award, hosted in Dubai, and was featured in CICA Museum, South Korea. In 2017 Tanner was featured on Artsper's Essential Artists of 2017 list, including Damien Hirst, Roy Lichtenstein, and Takashi Murakami. In 2018, Tanner was an artist of the week in Dubai, featured by Elevision Media, as well as being featured in Saatchi Gallery, London. This year, he also created Modern-Volume, an e-commerce clothing company based on his Condentionism style. Tanner co-founded the company with his cousin and childhood friend, David Richard, a computer engineer.
Tanner's unique style and work have been praised by professionals and industry insiders as showing a level of talent and creativity rare among emerging artists, holding him in high regard as a sleeping giant of American art. Tanner works out of a studio in downtown Fairbanks, Alaska, where he plans to further develop his style, concepts, and body of work.
