For over thirty years Margery Amdur has been actively creating site-specific, temporary, and permanent installations. She continues to work with unusual materials in counter intuitive ways. Repurposed paper drinking straws have become stamping tools for making monumental drawings saturated with more miniature circles than one can imagine. On top of these densely populated abstracted landscapes sit (sculptural) members from several generations of the Amass family- three-dimensional, densely covered, cosmetic sponge constructions.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Margery Amdur received her B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University and her M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Margery has had over 60 solo, two-person, national, and international exhibitions. Her work has been reviewed and featured in national and international publications that include Sculpture Magazine, New American Paintings, Fiber Arts, New Art Examiner, Manifest International Publications, Aesthetica Art Prize, ArtVoices, and Creative Practices for Visual Artists.
In the past five years, Margery has completed more than ten national and international projects. A few of the highlights include: Six weeks at Central European University, Budapest, Hungary as a Senior Visiting Artist. Traveling and installing works in The US Embassy in Paramaribo, Suriname, and in the US Ambassador’s residence in Riga Latvia. As a result of being one of the artists interviewed in Kenneth Steinbach’s book on Visual and Creative Art Practice, she was awarded solo exhibitions in two galleries on the campus of Augsburg University. Hosted by Minneapolis College of Art and Design, she was selected as one of four members on the Creative Visual Art Practice Panel. In 2019 she created Blind Sight, a site-specific installation, as part of the Istanbul Biennale. In addition, she created Inside Out, a temporary installation/community project, at the University of Havana. She will teach “Making Meaning,” an intensive mixed-media workshop, in Melbourne Australia in the summer of 2020.
