Lisa Rachel Horlander

Tyler, TX

"I explore spaces between objects with a focus on the hidden green areas within my city."
Horlander transplanted from California during childhood and grew up inspired with the grand old trees and magnificent skies filling East Texas. She completed her BFA from The University of Texas at Tyler in 2017 and participated in the 2018 Summer Residency Program at New York University, in New York City. Horlander explores spaces between objects with a focus on the hidden green areas within cities she lives in. Using contours within nature and emphasizes the interaction of light and atmosphere from a particular transition in time she uses shaped canvases like architecture, to commemorate the beauty of an ephemeral world.
Horlander recently became a Studio Artist with The Cedar Union and will exhibit with The Other Art Fair in the Fall. She has exhibited in group exhibitions with the Vignette Art Fair in Dallas, Femme Abstract in Austin, along with exhibits across Texas. She was honored to be the Committee Chair with Gallery Main Street in 2018, and appointed Mayor Barbara Bass’s Artist of the Year in 2012.

Q&A

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"I start by going outside and taking a walk until I find a hidden green space full of interesting trees and then I do several Plein-air watercolor paintings. I rely on those small studies, not photographs, for my future paitings and ideas."

Q&A

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"My favorite moment was running into a patron while I was walking in a local park, getting ready to do some sketches. We talked about my current work and how lovely the trees were that time of year.
I ended up getting some great sketches that day and created a painting based off of them. I posted a finished picture of the work, and that same friend contacted me to inquire about it. As I installed it into her office a couple of weeks latter, she asked me if the trees were from that same park. I had not realized the connection until she asked, and yes they were the trees we stood under talking about only a few months before!"
