Jorge Wellesley

Guttenberg, NJ

"Jorge Wellesley is a visual artist who use mostly painting, drawing and installations to talk about a relationship between Truth, Reality and Language. He is interested in what is arbitrary about language that creates miscommunication, affect social relations, and generates crisis of content. For him written language or text is a recourse sometimes used as abstraction and other times carries meaning. He also plays with other symbolic elements that belong to the world of communication like, billboards, pencils, signs, abstractions, empty spaces etc that he transfroms into something called “Textructures”."
Born in Havana (1979). Wellesley is graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in 2004. He taught painting workshops at ISA for five years. He was a co-founder of the projects: Department of Public Interventions (DIP) and Visual Space of Experimentation 08, both in Havana. His recent solo exhibitions includes The Power of the Words and the Words of Power, Happylucky No1 Gallery, Brooklyn, New York, 2018; Wrong reading, Art Center - South Florida, Miami, Florida, 2016. His work has been shown in group exhibitions like Kunst x Kuba, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen, Germany; Time Square Arts, Across the Road project, New York. He has received fellowships such as Residency Unlimited, Brooklyn, New York, 2017, and Vermont Studio Center, New York, 2015. His work is part of the permanent collection of Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana; Shelley & Donald Rubin Collection, New York, among others private collections around the world.
