Jane Kell studied the History and Theory of Art at Essex University and worked for many years in PR for the Arts. During her time as Head of Press for the National Gallery in London she worked closely with the Conservation team and it was this exposure to the working studios of the gallery, with their easels and pigments which gave her the push to try painting with oils. In the beginning she painted still life and landscapes and was influenced by British painters like William Nicholson, Mary Fedden and Euan Uglow, all artists for whom colour and light were of the utmost importance. A decade later she still enjoys painting still life and landscapes but she also paints abstracts and her work is on a larger scale but her interest in colour and light remains and it is this distinctive element which unites her work.
