The appeal was constant, it was only a matter of time, the interpretation that MAR makes of the environment that involves him as an artist must be painted…
At the age of 12 he already drew figures of his imagination with a bit of chalk in the asphalt. Over the years his professional choice was natural. During his academy course - graduated in Fashion Design at the F.A.L. - he applies for a job in a Portuguese animation studio “Magic Toons”, as a drawing artist. It´s by this time, in 98, that he has his first experience with graffiti. Since then, moved by his artistic convictions, Mar looks for constant self evolution and for the graffiti movement-which is evolving globally.
Known by his peers for his characters, he stands out for the way he builts his characters and atmospheres giving them lines and shapes that make them unique. Among a lot of commissioned works/street works, individuals or collective shows, the “VSP_Visual Street Performance” was one of the most notorious as a colective exhibition, being one of the most important of its kind in Portugal. He is also the mentor of “SeixalGraffit” since 2005, and took part in the international exhibition of customised sneakers “We Love Sneakers”, and the Eurocultured Tour in East Europe.
In 2010, he takes part in the collective show “Underdogs” at Vera Cortês Art Gallery, and works for the intervention in the parking lot Chão do Loureiro, for EMEL in Lisboa.
2011 brings the artist to the “Crono” festival in Lisboa, “Walk&Talk” in Azores and “Wool” in Covilhã, which would later have been selected as one of the 5 best walls of 2011 by the national newspaper Público. Collective show at António Prates gallery “Além Paredes/Beyond Walls”. Collective show at CascaisArtspace in Cascais.
2012 was the year of big scale paintings, having run Portugal from top to bottom with major interventions on walls and building facades, as it was the case of events like ARTUR in Lagos, Lourinhã and Alcântara in Lisboa. Ends the year with a solo show at Influx gallery in Lisboa, Lumiar.
2013 started with the creation of the Lusíadas mural (Av. India), a commissioned work that came to reveal itself as one of the best interventions of the year thanks to it’s symbolic and visual value, followed by the representation of Portugal in Tour Paris 13 alongside other artists. Developed the “Prego da Peixaria” main wall for the restaurante in Lisboa, participated in “O Bairro I o Mundo” with a building painting in Loures, left a work in BoideObra, Covilhã inserted as a social project, concept and execution for a commissioned work at Tabaqueira Portugal, and ended up with an intervention at Hotel Pestana, in Madeira.
2014 Developed the background structure for the anniversary concert of Portuguese band Xutos e Pontapés, participated in the biggest mural intervention (Lionesa/Unicer) up north, in Leça do Balio. Was part of the event “Expansão” in Caldas da Raínha, created the cover for two magazines of the publication “Expresso” about the 40 years anniversary of the 25 of April. Left an intervention at Palácio Dulcineia (logistics and communication agency). Invited to take part in the event Off the Wall, at Conrad Hotel in Quinta do Lago, Portugal.
Nowadays, his artistic aim has to do with the exploration of new urban spaces, and with the never ending evolution in the visual field, as well as in the graphic one, that graffiti can still offer.
