Danish-born Australian artist Gitte Backhausen lives in Gerringong on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. With a strong interest and background in human psychology, Backhausen’s work explores the subconscious mind. “To me art is freedom, it is a way of giving the subconscious a voice without the restrictions and demands of the mind.” Predominantly an abstract painter, in recent years my practice has expanded into a broader ray of approaches including collagraph prints, monoprints & mixed media on paper and assemblage art created from old discarded and found objects. I have come to understand myself as a multidisciplinary artist and find it an important part of my practice to explore and develop new approaches to my visual language.
