Danish-born Australian artist Gitte Backhausen lives in Gerringong on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. With a strong interest and background in human psychology, Backhausen’s work explores the subconscious mind. “To me art is freedom, it is a way of giving the subconscious a voice without the restrictions and demands of the mind.” Predominantly an abstract painter, in recent years my practice has expanded into a broader ray of approaches including collagraph prints, monoprints & mixed media on paper and assemblage art created from old discarded and found objects. I have come to understand myself as a multidisciplinary artist and find it an important part of my practice to explore and develop new approaches to my visual language. The common theme throughout my practice relates to questioning our roles in the world and navigating the human experience.
