San Francisco, CA

Fyrn creates modern furniture of uncommon heirloom quality. Founded by fourth generation craftsman Ros Broughton and built by a team of San Franciscan tradespeople, this studio aims to inspire a sense of connection between people, places, and materials.

Fyrn is an Old English prefix, pronounced "fē, yərn/," meaning: ancient, of old. The name marks the company's roots in traditional furniture making by people that take pride in working with their hands to make useful and beautiful things. Fyrn is dedicated to furthering these meaningful traditions and values.

Their first public offering, the Stemn Series, aims to change the way people relate to and value the objects they choose for their homes. Before opening sales up to the public, Fyrn spent several years creating made-to-order pilot builds for local commercial clients and SF residents. Early customers include renowned San Francisco restaurants Bellota, Shakewell, The Morris, and Piccino, as well as Google and Dropbox. Their success in these public spaces is a testament to the comfort and durability of their designs, “We’re always surprised and delighted when someone tells us they found us by turning their chair upside down in the middle of a meal, because they so enjoyed the experience of sitting on it.”

Fyrn may create classic pieces but they approach the entire production cycle with modern sensibility. From design to delivery they source materials responsibly, reduce/reuse waste where possible, develop new manufacturing technology in-house, and, of course, enhance the natural elements of their pieces.

“We believe that the relationship between you and a chair is like a handshake or an agreement. You just know when it feels right.” —Ros Broughton

More About This Creator

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?

"We started Fyrn to inspire a move away from disposable culture. We believe the unchallenged acceptance of planned obsolescence, people's obsession with cheap stuff, and the separation of people from where and how things are produced has warped our perceptions of real value and caused folks to lose touch with how the production of tangible goods actually impacts the world. We want to create furniture that forces people to slow down and inspires a curiosity about how the object was made, what materials were used, and who were the people involved. We believe that if you know the story of a chair’s origin and you live with it for decades, then it begins to hold a value that is greater than the chair itself and that’s something that can be passed on and shared with future generations."

What’s unique about your work?

"Fyrn Stemn is our system of hardware, parts, and pieces that use the strength of metal while maintaining the warmth of wood and upholstery. Rather than conceal the structural joints that connect the furniture, we exposed the patented brackets to create a unique signature aesthetic element. It just so happens that being in San Francisco emphasized our need for innovation. Inventory is stored in walls of component parts eliminating the need for huge warehouses full of assembled furniture. The furniture is very high-quality and ships flat - allowing quick lead times and a reduced carbon footprint. Thoughtful design and intuitive packaging create an assembly experience that is actually enjoyable and connects you to the makers. The furniture is 100% repairable not disposable, and proprietary parts and manufacturing processes enable local production without exploiting workers or the planet’s resources."
