Erik Otto

Erik Otto is a mixed-media artist working professionally in the creative disciplines of painting, sculpture and site-specific installation for over 10 years. Erik has held exhibitions nationally in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington DC and internationally in Vancouver, Mexico City, and Berlin. He was selected for the SF Recology Artist-in-Residence Program, received the VSCO Artist Initiative Grant, and produced work for YBCA Bay Area Now 7. He currently has work held in the private collections of the Grand Hyatt, Microsoft, LinkedIn, One Medical Group, and Uber.

Avid cyclist, explorer of the outdoor world, and a firm believer in taking risks, he once self-initiated and self-funded a 6-month long artist residency in the middle of Mexico City that resulted in a pop-up exhibition in an abandoned building just prior to its demolition.

Erik grew up in the South Bay Area, lived in San Francisco for 12 years, and is now based in Brooklyn, NY.

Brainstorm

This sculpture, made of formed wood and dimmable lights, portrays a moment of brainstorm and idea generation. It was produced and installed in the new offices of MM architectural firm. "Brainstorm" is another mixed media of Otto's: wood, paint and lights 48 x 48 x 48 in.

Natural High

The Apothecarium, Store, San Francisco

This original mixed media artwork depicts natural elements: the piece by Otto was painted on six separate wooden panels and permanently affixed to the wall done in a vertical composition. The colors and subject matter were chosen to invoke a gentle, therapeutic quality. The small additions of metallic silver and gold that create connection with the furnishing details found within the space. Titled "Natural High," the painting was created in 2016 and done in acrylic / aerosol on 6 wooden panels 5 x 15 ft.

Glass House

Recology Sculpture Garden, Other, San Francisco

Recology has an impressive and growing sculpture garden. Otto's permanent outdoor sculpture is a shelter-like artwork inspired by vulnerability and having a safe place to cultivate ones dreams. It is called "Glass House" and Erik made the piece using acrylic, aerosol, corrugated plastic, reclaimed wood & windows. It's large too at: 48 x 48 x 108 in.

"Water & Sky" Meet "Nature & Technology"

Combining both two-dimension and three-dimensional materials, Otto pushed two contrasting natural themes into Uber's South Bay office. The two unique site-specific murals were inspired by a connection between art and technology: "Nature meets Technology" and "Earth & Rock."

Changing Landscape

Otto's artwork at AIA was inspired by the space it was installed in. He combined layered transparent films on cut sheets of acrylic glass to create an abstract landscape filled with reflective and diffusion qualities. In its entirety, this installation expresses the concept of Resilience. The focus on resilience was requested by AIA who unveiled the artwork at the opening of an annual event filled with activities and workshops for architects.
