Don Mateo

Lyon, France

Don Mateo, born in the early '80s, he grew up with hip hop culture and became very passionate about graffiti.

In 2003, he joined the Beaux-Arts of Besançon then the Faculty of Bellas Artes de Cuenca in Spain ... Art should never leave him now! In 2010, Don Mateo moved to Lyon and made it his new playground. Soon, he puts on the walls of cities his famous portraits: anonymous people who challenge by the emotion and the energy they breathe. His leitmotif, his ambition, what drives him? : "Act as an urban anti-depressant and question the painting!"

Like Zorro and his sword, it is at the tip of his scalpel that he draws his lines to create the emotion, the surprise and so reveal the emptiness and carve the light through the looks he captures. He jostles the codes of the urban to share his view of the world and contradicts the movement with this unique style of its own. The portrait is a pretext to deal with the problems of painting (the figure, the line, the light). It is by oscillating between painting and sculpture that these portraits make sense. He reveals the fragility of our existence with subtlety, poetry and a certain bit of malice. "I am inspired by life in general and then I do according to my desires ... My pieces are sometimes engaged but it is not activism. It's more of an expression, a look at a subject. I am more oriented toward art.
