David West

Paris, France

"You can say I’m an individualist with a long career- and a lot of long term interests, from portraiture and music, to sea and cityscapes."
I live in Paris. I’m a painter and multimedia artist. I’m interested in the detritus and memories of places, and the vanishing world of cities. I currently work a lot in pastel and watercolour, as well as a crazy new group of paintings on velvet.
You may find a certain rock and roll attitude in my work, because I came up in a rock and roll world.

More About This Creator

How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your creative process?

"My work is usually a dialogue- whether I’m drawing, writing, editing or working with a theater company or musical collaboration- I have trust in knowing when something is finished, or to go through something difficult to make it work.
Like most people who work with fragile materials, I strive to make something correct the first time, and not overwork it. In the times I do, if I decide it’s salvageable, I have to work thru killing it, and bring it back to life....
Generally I want to be in the headspace where I do it right the first time."

What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?

"The fun part of having my work in situ is that it can pull a subliminal emotional lever, and affects the room where it’s been placed- even if it’s a landscape or especially one of my new works about light- because they are imbued with purpose, usually a balance of emotional violence and cool intellectual style.
That’s me. Come to my studio in Paris, or look at my website for more."

What funny moments, unexpected surprises, or obstacles have you encountered?

"The unexpected surprise is always getting the approval of the generation before mine-my parents generation. That’s meant a lot professionally and privately.."
