There have been many nights this winter where, as the sun sets and we cozy up against the evening’s chill, we wish the world was full of Galanter & Jones furniture. You may have spotted their benches around San Francisco but, unless you took a moment to sit, you’ve probably never noticed they’re heated!
Hidden inside the cast stone of these seats are unseen electric coils that invisibly heat up the entire piece. To spot a Galanter & Jones seat, look for their iconic, colorful bean-shapes with metal legs. From seats along the public SF Embarcadero to a custom 77ft vista bench at this Sonoma Valley winery, their heated furniture can be seen in special corners of California.
“ Watching people’s face when they sit in our furniture for the first time is incredibly satisfying; it’s a mixture of surprise, delight, and relaxation.”
Founded in 2012, Galanter & Jones is a brother/sister Greek-born duo who complement each other in various ways. Aaron, in charge of design and production, came up with the idea of making heated furniture and brought the design to life. Miranda, on the other hand, brought her experience as Style Editor at Sunset Magazine to the company by managing sales, PR, and marketing.
What is it like working with your sibling?
“It’s wonderful and challenging. At the end of the day, there is no one we would rather be in business with. I remember that we once rented a box truck and a generator to make a traveling ‘showroom’ for a trip down to LA. We didn’t count on the generator being so loud that we couldn’t talk over it.”
What is your creative process?
“Concrete is a fascinating material, with myriad applications. I love constantly working to improve our specific blend and experiment with new cast forms. It’s a long process and it’s guided by instinct, mostly. Once something takes shape on paper, we get it into the world as soon as possible so we can really look at it from all angles and see how it will interact with its surroundings.”
What inspires you?
“Natural shapes and forms, many very organic. Watching people’s face when they sit in our furniture for the first time is incredibly satisfying; it’s a mixture of surprise, delight, and relaxation.”
What advice would you give for creators wanting to start their own business?
“Ask for advice and help! There are so many people who came before you that made mistakes – learn from them. There are also LOTS of great business podcasts out there. Use them!”
